At sixty-four, I wasn't sure printed overalls were something I'd choose anymore.
I used to think overalls were purely practical. Fine for getting things done, perhaps, but not something I'd choose when I wanted to feel nicely dressed. Especially not with a pretty print.
And that's what bothers me about getting older sometimes. You find yourself ruling out things before you've even looked at them. Too young. Too colourful. Not really for me. Until your wardrobe is full of safe choices and nothing that makes you smile.
Then I saw these little wildflowers on soft sage green. Tiny pink, orange and purple blooms, with the odd little bee among them. And instead of thinking about my age, I found myself imagining an ordinary sunny morning.
A plain white top underneath. My comfortable sandals. Pockets for the little things I always need. No complicated outfit to put together.
They're currently A$74.95 at Celia & June, with sizes S–5XL listed. I haven't worn this pair myself, but the adjustable straps, easy leg shape and photographs gave me three good reasons to look twice.
The relaxed style shown on a sunny verandah with nothing more complicated than a white top and sandals.
What caught my eye wasn't just the flowers. It was the freedom.
There are days when I love a dress. And there are days when I simply want to sit down, walk around, bend to pick something up and get on with life without feeling dressed for an occasion.
That's the appeal of this shape to me. These overalls are described as relaxed, with plenty of room through the legs rather than a fitted trouser cut. In the photographs, the trousers hang loosely instead of looking stiff or narrow.
I like that the top underneath can be something I already own. A plain tee, a soft sleeveless top or a light layer when the morning is cooler.
Comfort should make life easier, not mean that I stop caring how I look. I think that's a balance many of us are quietly looking for.
And with a little floral print on top of it all, the outfit can still feel cheerful rather than merely practical.
Laid out on the bed, the adjustable straps and easy leg shape are clear.
Little wildflowers, and even the occasional bee
Sometimes a print is what makes a piece feel like yours. Not an enormous floral pattern that enters the room before you do, but small details that reward a closer look.
Against this muted green are delicate stems and tiny flowers in pink, lavender, orange and soft yellow. There are even little bees tucked into the design.
Now, I don't think every woman wants flowers on her clothes. But if you're anything like me, there are days when a bit of colour simply makes an ordinary outfit more interesting.
Because the pattern already has personality, I'd keep everything else uncomplicated. The photographs show how it works with a simple white top and flat sandals.
It's a gentle kind of pretty. Not a dress-up costume, and not another dull pair of everyday trousers either.
A close-up shows the small flowers, a tiny bee and the adjustable strap hardware.
Three things I'd check before ordering overalls
First, the shoulder straps. These are adjustable, which gives you some control over how the bib sits and where the leg length falls. I'd still compare the measurements with trousers I already like.
Second, the room through the hips and legs. The product description calls the fit loose, and you can see the wider trouser shape in the pictures. I'd check the waist, hip and overall length measurements rather than guess from the size label.
Third, the pockets. You can see the side pockets in the photographs — a rather useful detail when you're heading out with a key or a tissue and don't want to carry a bag everywhere.
The cuffs are shown rolled in some of the pictures, which also gives a different look. Whether that would be the right length on you depends on your height.
I'm not going to tell you one cut is flattering on every body. But adjustable straps, a relaxed shape and useful pockets are sensible things to look for.
On the dining table, the straps, pockets and roomy trouser shape are easy to inspect.
I always check the price once I've decided a design is worth considering. Celia & June currently lists these overalls at A$74.95, with a crossed-out comparison price of A$149.95. The live product page shows the actual price and available sizes.
But a discount isn't the reason I'd choose something. I'd ask myself whether I could picture wearing it on more than one occasion.
A warm afternoon in the garden. A relaxed coffee out. A weekend visit to family. The kind of days that make up most of our lives.
I'd also read the size guide and current delivery and returns details before buying. I wouldn't want a nice print to distract me from getting the practical bits right.
If the colour is your sort of thing, the fit measurements work, and you can already think of what you'd wear underneath, then perhaps this isn't something that needs to sit on your wish list for weeks.
Sometimes it's lovely simply to make a considered choice and have something to look forward to wearing.
The overalls draped over a sofa: an everyday outfit with an unusually cheerful print.
What I'd tell you if we were having a cuppa
If you told me, 'Elaine, surely I'm too old for printed overalls,' I'd understand why you might think that. I nearly thought the same thing.
But I'd ask whether it's really your age you dislike — or just the memory of an uncomfortable pair you wore years ago.
These have a relaxed silhouette, adjustable straps and little wildflowers that make them feel more like a cheerful everyday outfit than purely practical clothing.
I haven't personally tried them on, so I can't promise they'll be your new favourite. The right thing is to look at the photos, check the measurements and decide whether the style feels like you.
But please don't let an old rule about what women our age 'should' wear make the decision before you do.
If you love the little wildflowers and can picture yourself wearing them with the tops already in your wardrobe, I'd shop the overalls now and choose your size. Ordinary days deserve something lovely too.
Draped over a chair, the floral design feels at home rather than dressed up.
I don't think the best clothes are the ones we keep for later. They're the ones we can picture enjoying next week.
If this little floral print makes you smile, shop the overalls now, check your measurements and choose the size that's right for you. There's no need to wait for somebody else to give you permission to wear something cheerful.
Love,
Elaine
