A letter from Elaine, about the quilted basket I wouldn't mind leaving out

A letter from Elaine

I Thought Laundry Baskets Were All the Same. Then I Saw the One with Cats.

Six things I noticed about the cat-patterned basket that looks rather more interesting than another plastic tub.

I have done enough washing over the years to know one thing: it doesn't matter whether you're at home or away for a few days, the laundry always manages to find you.

At home there are the towels, the sheets and the clothes that seem to appear out of nowhere. On holiday it's swimmers, sandy towels and that one damp thing nobody remembers leaving in the bathroom.

And for years I gave the basket carrying it all hardly a second thought. A plastic tub, a shopping bag, whatever would hold the washing until I got around to it.

Which is rather funny when you think about it. I care about what the house looks like. I like a pretty cushion and a room that feels welcoming. But the laundry basket? That was always the thing I'd rather keep out of sight.

Laundry baskets seem to come in two varieties: plain plastic ones that take up space, and beautiful ones you wonder whether you should actually use. I don't know why we ought to have to choose.

Then I came across Poppy, a quilted laundry basket covered in the most cheerful parade of cats. I won't pretend a basket is going to make the washing disappear. But this one made me look twice.

The cats were the first thing I noticed. Then I started looking at the practical bits: it stands upright when empty, has two canvas handles, and can be folded away when I don't need it.

I haven't put it through years of laundry, so I'm not going to promise you things I can't know. But these are the six details that would make me consider it instead of buying another plain old tub.

The washing is never going to disappear. But perhaps the basket carrying it doesn't have to be the ugliest thing in the room.

1It stands up on its own, even empty

Have you ever tried putting washing into a soft shopping bag when you've got both hands full? The sides fold in just as you're trying to put the first towel inside, and suddenly the bag is more trouble than the washing.

That's why the first thing I look for now is whether a basket will stand up when it's empty. Poppy is designed to do exactly that.

I can picture it beside the washing machine, waiting for the next load instead of slumping in a heap on the floor. And because it has a quilted fabric finish, it doesn't look quite so much like the plastic tubs I've spent years hiding behind doors.

It's such a small detail, but anyone who does the washing week after week will know why I noticed it.

2There isn't a plain back to hide

Now, the cats. I know a pattern like that won't be everybody's cup of tea. But I rather love it.

There's a whole parade of little cats on Poppy, with different colours and expressions, and the design carries on around the basket instead of stopping at the front.

That matters more than you might think. My laundry basket never stays pointing in one direction. It gets moved out of the way, turned round, and parked wherever there's a bit of space.

I like the idea of not having to find the 'good side' to show. If I leave a basket in the bedroom or bathroom, I'd rather it looked cheerful from wherever I'm standing.

And yes, I suspect a cat lover would find it very hard to ignore.

3The handles are part of the design

There's nothing glamorous about carrying a load of washing from one end of the house to the other. I've done it often enough to know that.

And when the basket has sharp plastic edges or handles that dig into your fingers, you certainly notice them.

Poppy has a canvas handle on either side, stitched to the quilted body. I like that there are proper places to lift it, rather than having to grab the whole basket in your arms.

I can't tell you what a particular load will weigh or how it will feel in somebody else's hands. But if I were choosing a basket for everyday use, the handles would be one of the first details I'd check.

Pretty is lovely. Practical is still rather important.

4A little splash doesn't have to be a disaster

If you've ever had children or grandchildren staying over, you know the laundry room rarely looks like one of those perfect photographs.

There's a damp towel near the machine, something left on the floor and probably a basket waiting to be filled again.

That's why I wouldn't want a basket that only looks nice. It has to make sense in an ordinary house.

Poppy is listed as a quilted cotton-polyester blend that resists everyday light splashes and can be wiped clean. The product information also says it can be washed when needed.

I'd still check the care instructions before doing anything more than a quick wipe, of course. But it is reassuring to see that the material has been chosen for real household use, not just for decoration.

5Light enough to take away, and it folds away too

Have you ever noticed how much room an empty plastic laundry basket takes up? Exactly as much as a full one, unfortunately.

In a smaller bathroom or a guest bedroom, that can be a nuisance. And if you've ever tried squeezing a big plastic tub into the boot for a holiday, you'll know why a foldable one sounds appealing.

Poppy is designed to be lightweight and fold down when it's not needed.

To me, that's the sensible part of the design. It can stand up when you want to use it and fold away when you need the space back.

Some days the laundry seems to take over the house. On the days it doesn't, I rather like the idea of getting a little floor space back.

6Three sizes, and rather a lot of choices

One lesson I've learned from buying things for the house is not to guess the size from a photograph.

A basket for a small bathroom and a basket for all the family towels are two very different things. And there's no point buying something lovely if you can't find a sensible place to put it.

Poppy comes in three sizes: Small, approximately 36 × 46 cm; Medium, approximately 41 × 56 cm; and Large, approximately 51 × 71 cm. I'd check the size guide before choosing, because the product information also notes that measurements may vary a little.

And then comes the fun part. Poppy is one design in a much larger collection of patterned baskets.

I'd probably start with the cats. Someone else might prefer flowers or a completely different animal print. It's nice to have the choice.

The danger, of course, is that you go looking for a laundry basket and suddenly start thinking one might be useful in the spare bedroom as well.

Poppy, against the laundry baskets I've been used to

I know you can buy a laundry basket almost anywhere. I've carried washing in ordinary tubs and shopping bags for years. But if I were choosing a new one, these are the differences I'd pay attention to.

Most ordinary laundry baskets

• Hard plastic that can feel awkward to carry.

• Often plain, with little thought given to appearance.

• Bulky to store, even when empty.

• Usually something you tuck away behind a door.

• Useful for laundry, but not always attractive for visible storage.

The Poppy Cat Parade

• Soft quilted fabric with two stitched canvas handles.

• Colourful cat artwork that wraps around the basket.

• Stands upright on its own, even when empty.

• Lightweight and foldable for convenient storage.

• Decorative enough for bedrooms, bathrooms and laundry rooms.

About the price

I'll be straight about the price, because that's the thing I check before getting carried away.

Poppy is currently listed at A$64.95 for a single Small basket, A$69.95 for Medium and A$79.95 for Large. There are multi-pack options as well, so the price will depend on what you choose.

I wouldn't buy the biggest one just because it looks impressive in a photograph. I'd measure the space, check the size options and make sure it was right for what I wanted to put in it.

And I would check the current price and delivery information on the product page before ordering. An attractive sale price is nice, but knowing exactly what you're buying matters more.

If you and I were having a cuppa and you asked whether it was worth giving a pretty laundry basket a second look, I'd say yes — provided it can still do the job.

I can't promise it will make anybody enjoy washing towels. I don't think a basket in the world could manage that.

But the ordinary things we use every day don't have to be dull. Sometimes a cheerful print and a few sensible details are all it takes to make one little corner of the house feel nicer.

If you love cats, have a look at Poppy. And if you don't, there are plenty of other designs in the basket collection.

If that cheerful cat print has stayed in your mind, I'd shop the basket collection now and compare the sizes and designs. Check the current details, choose what will work in your home, and let the practical things be a little prettier.

Love,

Elaine
