A letter from Elaine

At 64, I Still Want to Feel Lovely When the Wedding Invitations Arrive

I still want to feel lovely at a wedding. I just don't want choosing the dress to be hard work.

I love being invited to a wedding. It's the getting-dressed part that can make me hesitate.

At sixty-four, I don't want to look twenty-five again. But I don't want to spend a lovely afternoon in a dress that feels nothing like me, either. I want colour, a little movement and the freedom to enjoy myself without fussing over my outfit.

The trouble is that occasion dresses often seem to go in two directions: terribly formal, or terribly safe. Surely there's something in between.

That's why I stopped at Celeste. The navy version has big watercolour flowers, a one-shoulder neckline and a soft, flowing chiffon skirt. There is a crossover waist with a smocked band, and the hem is slightly uneven.

What caught my eye wasn't the idea of looking younger. It was the possibility of feeling properly dressed for a special day, without adding dozens of accessories.

Celeste is one of the styles in the Wedding Guest Dresses collection. Here's what I'd look at before choosing it — or a different dress that feels more like you.

Celeste in everyday afternoon light. It's easier to picture a dress when you can see it worn.

The detail I nearly talked myself out of

The one shoulder was the first thing I questioned. I often find myself dismissing a neckline before I've properly looked at the rest of the dress.

But Celeste is quite soft in other respects. The chiffon falls into a long skirt, and the oversized florals give it plenty of personality without asking for much jewellery.

With a little clutch and shoes I could really walk in, I can picture it for an afternoon ceremony or a garden celebration.

Would I think about underwear and coverage before choosing a one-shoulder dress? Absolutely. That's part of finding something that works for you, rather than simply copying a photograph.

I like the idea of choosing a dress because the shape appeals to me, not ruling it out because of my age.

What I'd want to know beyond the pretty photograph

An invitation isn't just an hour at the ceremony. There might be garden photographs, a long lunch and plenty of time catching up with people you haven't seen for years.

I'd look at the practical details: a softly flowing skirt, an asymmetric hem and the crossover waist with its smocked band. They give Celeste its shape.

The product listing describes the fabric as chiffon. I'd check the product photographs carefully and think about how that would suit the weather and the occasion.

I'd also be honest about whether a one-shoulder neckline is something I'd enjoy wearing. There's no point choosing a lovely dress if you know you'll spend the day worrying about it.

That is why I like being able to compare different dresses in one collection instead of committing to the first thing that catches my eye.

Three little checks that make choosing easier

One. The size. Celeste is available in S through 2XL. I would check the actual measurements rather than assume my usual letter size will fit the same way.

Two. The colour. The listing offers Navy, Pink and Lavender. I rather like the navy with those warm floral colours, but somebody else may feel much more themselves in pink or lavender.

Three. The occasion. Would I wear the dress again for an anniversary lunch, a garden event or a special dinner? If I can imagine more than one outing, it feels like a more thoughtful purchase.

And if the one-shoulder style isn't for you, I'd look at the alternative necklines and sleeves in the Wedding Guest Dresses collection. The right choice is the one you feel happy wearing.

About the price — and the sensible questions

Celeste is currently listed at A$89.95. I always check what a dress actually costs before getting too carried away with the photographs.

If I were ordering for a wedding, I'd start with the date. I'd check the delivery information, then measure properly and read the size guide.

I'd look at the return conditions too, especially with an occasion dress. It's worth understanding the process and any return shipping costs before paying.

The product card below uses the current Shopify price, while the collection lets you compare Celeste with other wedding guest styles.

I think there's something reassuring about making the decision with the practical details in front of you, rather than feeling rushed by a sale banner.

What I'd tell you if we were having a cuppa

If we were sitting together with a cup of tea and you told me you were stuck for something to wear, I'd say: start with what you actually like.

Perhaps it's a floral print. Perhaps it's a simple neckline with sleeves. Perhaps it's a long skirt that feels a little special without being terribly formal.

Celeste caught my eye because it has colour and character. The flowing shape looks lovely in the photographs, but I'd still check the fit and details for myself before deciding.

You don't need to wear something bold to prove anything. And you don't need to choose the safest dress on the rail just because you've reached a certain birthday.

I'd give yourself ten minutes to look through the collection and choose the one you can imagine feeling comfortable and beautifully dressed in.

Nobody needs to dress like someone else to enjoy a lovely occasion.

If Celeste caught your eye, take a look at the styles and colours in the collection. And if another dress feels more like you, that's a good reason to choose it instead.

If a wedding is already on the calendar, I'd choose a dress with enough time to check the size and delivery details properly. Shop the wedding guest collection now, find the style that feels like you, and make one more thing about that lovely day easier.

Love,

Elaine
