At 64, I Still Want a Little Black Dress That Feels Like Me
A little black dress, a few lovely lace details, and no need to wait for a special invitation.

I've always liked the idea of a little black dress. The trouble is, so many of them seem to assume you're going somewhere very grand.
At sixty-four, I don't want a dress that makes me feel dressed up as somebody else. And I certainly don't want to buy something pretty only to leave it hanging in the wardrobe until a wedding invitation arrives.
Sometimes all I want is to go out for lunch, meet a friend, or have a nice evening without spending ages wondering what to wear. Something simple enough for an ordinary day, with a few lovely details that make it feel like I've made an effort.
That is why I stopped and looked at Vivienne. It's black, of course, but not plain: there's delicate lace around the V-neck and sleeves, a gathered skirt and a smocked bodice that gives the dress its shape.
The lace was what first caught my eye. Then I noticed the short puff sleeves and the way the skirt falls from the waist.
I haven't tried Vivienne on, and I wouldn't pretend photographs can tell you exactly how a dress will fit. But there are some thoughtful details worth looking at before you decide whether it's the sort of little black dress you would actually wear.
The lace is what made me look twice. It's not quite the plain black dress I had in mind.
The lace makes this more than another plain black dress
I think black can be a lovely colour to wear, but sometimes a plain black dress feels a little too serious for an ordinary afternoon.
What caught my eye about Vivienne is the lace around the neckline. The V-shaped front has delicate openwork detail, and there is more lace around the sleeves and along the hem.
That gives the dress a pretty, slightly vintage look without asking you to wear lots of jewellery or a dramatic pair of shoes.
I like being able to see the detail up close in ordinary daylight. It tells you more than a heavily styled photograph ever could.
Of course, lace isn't everybody's cup of tea. But if you like a little femininity without a lot of fuss, it's the detail I would look at first.
Laid out on the table, you can see the lace at the neckline, sleeves and hem.
It's the sort of dress I'd want to wear on an ordinary Saturday
Somewhere along the way, I think we get into the habit of saving our nice clothes for special occasions.
The good shoes are for dinner. The pretty dress is for an invitation. And for the rest of the week, we keep reaching for the same safe things because they're easy.
I don't see why a lunch out or an afternoon with friends shouldn't be a nice enough reason to wear a dress you like.
Vivienne has that simple black colour you could style with sandals or everyday flats. A cardigan or a light jacket could change the look again.
The puff sleeves and little lace details add interest, so I don't think you'd need much else.
I would still think about where the hem will sit on me before choosing it. The right length for one woman can feel quite different on another.
A simple black dress over the sofa arm. The lace gives it character without needing accessories.
Three little things I'd check before ordering
One. The smocked bodice. The gathered stitching gives the top its shape, and that's something I'd examine carefully. I'd compare the bust and waist measurements with a dress I already feel good in instead of guessing.
Two. The sleeves and neckline. The short puff sleeves have a pretty lace edge, while the V-neck sits open at the front. I'd think about whether that gives me the coverage I personally want.
Three. The skirt and hem. Vivienne has a softly flared skirt with a lace-trimmed edge. I'd check the actual garment length in the size guide — photographs can make a dress look quite different depending on how tall the person is.
And I'd look at how the fabric sits when it's laid out naturally. The product description calls it lightweight, but I'd still check the care details before ordering.
I don't think anyone should buy a dress because somebody says it's flattering on everyone. I'd much rather look at the details and decide whether the shape suits me.
Hanging on the wardrobe door, the gathered bodice and skirt shape are easy to see.
About the price — and whether you'd wear it more than once
I'll be straightforward about the price, because that's always the next thing I'd want to know.
Vivienne is currently listed at A$99.95, in Black, with sizes from S through 3XL. The live product page is the right place to check the current price and size options.
For me, the question wouldn't simply be whether the dress looks nice. It would be whether I could imagine reaching for it more than once.
Perhaps for lunch with friends, a family dinner or a little weekend away. That's what makes a versatile black dress appealing: you can change the shoes and the bag without buying a whole new outfit.
Before ordering, I'd compare the size guide with my own measurements and read the current delivery and returns information. There's no point rushing that part.
A pretty dress is lovely. Feeling confident about what you're ordering matters just as much.
It's easy to picture a black dress like this among the clothes for a weekend away.
What I'd tell you if we were having a cuppa
If we were sitting at the kitchen table and you said you were tired of saving all your nice clothes for later, I'd understand completely.
I'd tell you that you don't need a grand occasion to enjoy something with a little lace, a pretty neckline or a skirt that moves softly.
Vivienne caught my eye because it looks like a little black dress with personality. Not covered in sparkle, not terribly formal, just a few feminine details on a simple shape.
I haven't worn it myself, so I wouldn't promise it will feel right on your body. I'd check the measurements and decide whether you like the neckline and length.
But I wouldn't rule it out simply because it's a little more interesting than what you normally wear.
At sixty-four, I still want clothes that feel like me. I don't think that should be too much to ask.
The little black dress on the bedroom door, ready for a proper look at the details.
So that's what I'd say over a cup of tea: a pretty black dress doesn't have to sit in the wardrobe waiting for the perfect occasion.
If the lace and smocked shape appeal to you, have a look at Vivienne and compare the measurements before choosing your size.
If you love the lace and can picture Vivienne with shoes you already own, I'd shop the dress now and look closely at the size chart and length. A pretty black dress needn't spend another season on a wish list when you can make a considered choice today.

Elaine
