At 64, I Want a Pretty Weekend Dress That Doesn't Take Any Thinking

One easy dress, a few nice weekend plans and no need to overthink what to wear.

I love a weekend when nothing much is planned. Perhaps a walk in the morning, lunch somewhere lovely and a few hours with no particular place to be.

The trouble is that I sometimes spend more time choosing what to wear than the outing really deserves.

At sixty-four, I've decided I'd rather have clothes that make an ordinary day feel a little nicer without needing half an hour in front of the wardrobe. Something I can pull on with sandals and feel properly dressed.

That is what made me stop at Josette. It's a grey ruffle-trimmed dress with a V-neck, little flutter sleeves and a long, relaxed skirt. A few pretty details at the top, then a simple shape that doesn't appear to need much fuss.

And when I looked closer, I noticed the pockets. Proper side pockets in a summer dress are always worth a second look.

I haven't personally worn Josette, so I can't tell you what it feels like after a full day. But I can tell you what I'd look for before deciding, and why this is the sort of easy dress I'd consider for a weekend away — or simply an ordinary Saturday.

The little ruffles at the neckline were the first detail that made me look twice.

The ruffles caught my eye, but the simple shape kept it

At first, I noticed the little ruffles around the V-neck. They add a bit of interest without making the whole dress look terribly formal.

The short flutter sleeves are part of the same idea. They're softer than a plain sleeveless top, but still have that summery, easygoing feel.

Then there's the skirt. In the photographs, it falls loosely from below the neckline rather than fitting closely at the waist.

That's the kind of shape I'd want to look at properly before deciding what to wear for a warm day. It has a little personality at the top, with the rest kept very simple.

I like that combination. Not boring, but not a dress that needs an entire outfit planned around it.

The small ruffles are really the only flourish. The rest of the shape is beautifully simple.

A dress for the plans you haven't made yet

Some weekends begin with an idea of doing absolutely nothing and somehow turn into three small outings.

A walk through the park, a stop for coffee, perhaps visiting family on the way home. I don't want to dress formally for any of that, but I do like feeling as though I've made a little effort.

Josette has the kind of relaxed long skirt I can picture with flat sandals and an everyday bag. The grey is easy to pair with the things already in the wardrobe.

The photographs show it in ordinary daylight rather than just against a studio wall. That's helpful for seeing the overall length and the way the fabric hangs.

And it isn't the sort of dress I would save only for a special invitation. Sometimes a nice Saturday is reason enough.

Three details I'd check before choosing

One. The pockets. Josette has functional side pockets, and you can see one used in the photographs. I love that such a pretty little detail can also be practical.

Two. The fabric. The listing describes it as a breathable cotton-linen blend. I would check the current care information, because natural-looking summer fabrics can need a little attention after washing.

Three. The fit. The dress is designed with a loose, flowing shape and a ruffled V-neck. I'd check the bust, length and arm openings against a dress that already fits me well, rather than simply guessing my usual size.

I don't believe a dress can be perfect for everyone. We all like different levels of coverage and different lengths. I'd rather spend five minutes checking the details than buy something that isn't quite me.

About the price — and why I'd want to wear it often

I'll be straightforward about the price, because I always check before getting carried away with a pretty neckline.

Josette is currently listed at A$84.95. The listing includes a choice of colours and sizes, so the live product page is the right place to check which combination is available.

For me, the question is whether I can imagine wearing it on more than one kind of day. If a dress works for a lunch out, a weekend visit and a warm afternoon at home, that makes it much more interesting than something that only leaves the wardrobe twice a year.

I'd check the size guide and delivery information first, and read the returns conditions before ordering.

And if I wasn't sure about this neckline, I would have a look through the Weekend Sets collection for other easygoing styles.

What I'd tell you over a cuppa

If we were sitting together with a cup of tea and you told me you wanted to feel nicely dressed without having to make a big production of it, I'd understand completely.

I'd say start with a shape you enjoy wearing. Think about the weather, the shoes you actually reach for and whether you'd still be comfortable after lunch.

Josette caught my eye because the ruffled neckline gives it a little character, while the long, loose shape looks easy to style. And those pockets are a welcome extra.

I haven't tried it on, so I wouldn't promise it would become anyone's favourite. I'd look at the measurements and the photographs from different angles first.

But I don't think we need to wait for a special occasion to enjoy a pretty dress. A lovely ordinary weekend is a perfectly good reason.

I'd rather have a few things in the wardrobe that make getting dressed easier than a rail full of clothes I'm always saving for later.

If Josette caught your eye, have a look at the sizes and other styles in the Weekend Sets collection, and choose the one that suits your own weekend plans.

If you're hoping to make weekends a little easier to dress for, I'd shop the Weekend Sets collection today. Pick a shape you can imagine wearing often, check the sizing, and give yourself something nice for the days with no grand plans.

Love,

Elaine
